Osakas Chrysanthemum Sword Unique Traditions

Description: The samurai culture is rooted in Japan where it evolved during the early Heian period (794-1185) and became more prominent during the Muromachi (1336-1573), Azuchi-Motai (1568-1603) and Edo (1603–1868) periods. During these periods, samurais developed a strict code of conduct known as Bushido which emphasized duty, loyalty, honor, and purity. The word Samurai has come to symbolize all Japanese warriors, regardless of their class or status. Chrysanthemums (Kiku) were highly prized by the samurais for their beauty, strength, and longevity, which made them an ideal gift for both sword ceremonies and special occasions such as weddings and funerals. During the Sengoku period, Chrysanthemum was often given to samurais as a symbol of good luck and bravery. In addition to their beauty, chrysanthemums also represented purity and elegance among women during this time period. In Osaka, where the Battle of Summer of Money took place (1573), Chrysanthemum was used as a sword decoration. After the battle, these flower petals were placed on the blade to symbolize victory and honor. The custom of placing Chrysanthemum flowers on the sword spread throughout Japan during the Edo period and became a popular way for samurais to express their gratitude towards others or to mark significant events in their lives. Today, the custom is still prevalent in Japan where Chrysanthemums are given to celebrate occasions such as promotions, birthdays, weddings, retirements, anniversaries, and funerals.
